Soil Quality and Preparation
Then, till the soil is at least 6-10 inches. Tilling, or the turning over of the soil, allows the grass to “breathe better”, as the soil can take in more air. It is smart to also add compost to your lawn, as this will improve the soil’s quality. Once you till the soil, you can level the area by using a rake or a similar tool. Leveling is important, as this will help create a flatter surface for when you are ready to install sod.
Time Is Of the Essence
Selecting Sod For Your Lawn
Sod Measurements
Do Not Rush Installation
One of the most critical things to remember is to align every piece of sod together to prevent gaps. You can overlap the edges a little bit, and it is actually to your benefit to do so. After laying the sod, use a lawn roller to remove any air pockets or bubbles from the soil.
Watering Your New Sod
While watering is necessary, do not overwater the sod, as this can compromise your sod’s development. Do not walk on the new sod during the first couple of weeks as well. After the sod begins to develop in your lawn, you can water it less and start a more normal lawn maintenance routine.
